The (re-)formulating pressure in the coating industry, such as steadily increasing regulatory ingredient restrictions, the need for cost reduction and the transition to bio-based ingredients, results in a substantial increase in R&D challenges and efforts. The Hansen Similarity Parameters (HSP) framework and their web apps, including assisted case studies of coatings, combined with HT screening will be presented for efficient (re-)formulating.
The predictive formulation science HSP is a very powerful framework to match, replace and bridge the best ingredients, resulting in maximum overall performance of end-products while minimizing development time. The model allows a predictive parameter to be given to a wide variety of binders, solvents, pigments, fillers and additives, to develop any type of coating. As this is based on thermodynamics, every ingredient will give its maximum contribution to improve stability, film formation, particle size, etc. Each ingredient HSP can be used repeatedly and reduces experimental work >10x, saves 10–100x on time and >10% on costs.
This approach makes it a very efficient and sustainable R&D workflow, but more HSP needs to become available, for which High Throughput (HT) screening is implemented. VLCI established the world’s largest shared HSP database of commercial ingredients, which is upgraded monthly with ingredients selected by its users. This is linked to the HSP-based formulation web app to visualize and privately search for the best matching ingredients via instant calculations. A Design of Experiments can therefore be generated efficiently, after which the experimental validation can be further accelerated via High Throughput (HT) screening.
